Dementia Services

Dementia doesn’t have to stop you living at home

Nobilis is committed to helping people affected by dementia live happily, safely and securely in their own home. Currently there are over 750,000 people in the UK diagnosed with dementia. It is estimated that by 2025 this figure will have increased to over 1 million.

Dementia does not exclusively affect the elderly. At present, there are over 16,000 young people affected by the disease in the UK.

The disease can often be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are commonly associated with a wide variety of alternative conditions.

If you are worried that someone close to you may be suffering from dementia, keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

  • lapses in memory and trouble finding the right words.
  • forgetting the way home from the shops, or being unable to remember names and places
  • unusual mood changes
  • problems with communication i.e. reading writing and talking

If you are at all worried for yourself or a relative, make an appointment with a GP, who will perform some very simple tests, often involving a simple conversation, to make a diagnosis.

If you have been diagnosed with dementia or are a relative of someone who has, it has probably come as a shock; despite how prepared you felt you were. You probably have an awful lot of questions that you’d like answers too.

At Nobilis we have a specially trained team of dementia carers, who have a wealth of experience and knowledge between them. We can answer all your questions and provide you with the comfort that you are not tackling this alone.

One of the first questions we get asked is ‘can I continue living at home?’

Studies have shown that those affected by dementia can benefit greatly from the familiarity associated with living in their own home. We have found that this is certainly the case with our client and our carers prioritise ensuring you or your loved one is able to do this safely, for as long as possible.

Carefully managed and with the right support, there is no reason why a dementia sufferer cannot maintain independence and quality of life at home for years to come.

People often forget the impact of dementia on the family of a sufferer. If you have had a relative diagnosed with dementia it can seem overwhelming. There is so much to learn and so much to think about that you have never had to consider before. You can often feel lost. The internet is a great source of information but it is often conflicting. This is why we have started to compile a resource where you can find the latest information, guidance and practical advice around living with or caring for someone with dementia. Visit our dementia resource page for all this and more.

Nobilis’ specialist dementia care revolves around creating and maintaining a familiar routine and environment for dementia sufferers, within their own homes. We carefully match our carers to our clients based on a variety of criteria, including common interests and the type of care required. This ensures they receive the necessary support but more than that, gain a trusted companion who can be relied upon to take care of everything they are unable to.
